Warning! These films are going to give you the biggest case of wanderlust

No more browsing Netlfix for hours deciding what to watch tonight. We handpicked some of the best films that are bound to make your perfect night in and inspire you to travel more.

1. Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona

The story revolves around two friends Vicky and Critstina who decide to spend their summer at a friend’s house in Spain. Here is where Javier Bardem comes in as charming Juan Antonio and flips their trip (and lives) upside down . If you love Spanish guitar, fiery relationships and beautiful sights of Barcelona you will list this Woody Allen piece as one of your favourites.

“After a few interesting-yet-tepid films, Woody Allen is a wonder once more with this sexy, witty inspection of love, lust, and marriage basking under a stunning Mediterranean sun” – Jhoanna Robledo. Common Sense Media

2. Wild

Follow Cheryl Strayed’s journey as she takes the time to figure her life out after the loss of her mother and marriage, as she takes on the Pacific Crest Trail with no hiking experience. Powerful, funny and heartwarming, this film will take you on an emotional rollercoaster, that is bound to leave you wanting to pack your rucksack and hit the road.

“Wild may be full of natural beauty but it is also a celebration of the power of art” – O. Scott, The NYTimes

3.  Midnight in Paris

Another of Woody Allen pieces as he gives us a story of a novelist in progress Gil Pender, who is on a trip with his fiancee in Paris. Not seeing eye to eye on how to spend an evening, Gil takes a walk alone around Paris after dark. A strange encounter on the street sweeps him into 20s where he meets some iconic artists, writers and musicians. The film explores the dissatisfaction with now and the “grass is greener” mindset, alongside admiration for our cultural heroes. Would sharing a glass of vermouth with Ernest Hemingway change your perspective?

“Light, assured, and utterly charming: Woody Allen’s sublime gifts are still intact” – Ian Nathan, Empire

4. Catch Me If You Can

Do you know may overachievers who have managed to have worked as a lawyer, doctor and a co-pilot of a major airline by the time they turned 18? Frank Abagnale Jr (Leonardo DiCaprio) is one of them. At 17 he became known as the most successful bank robber in the US history. Witness how skilfully Frank escapes the FBI agents time and time again. This movie will definitely make you want to switch things up in your routine. Only try to avoid robbing banks!

“FBI Agent Hanratty might be one of the best bank fraud men in the Bureau, but he’s never met a suspect like this. Frank Abagnale not only forges checks, he forges lives” – Loren Eaton, Plugged In

5. Lion

One of my personal favourites, this film tells a story of a young boy in India who accidentally ends up on a train that takes him miles away from his family. Unable to find his way home he gets adopted by an Australian family. Twenty-five years later based on his memory alone, Saroo tries to find his family using only Google Earth maps. Based on a true story, this film will not only make you cry your heart out but also leave you wanting to visit India and get to know the local culture.

“If you have ever been a child, raised a child, lost a child or met a child — or any of the above with respect to a mother — this movie will wreck you” – A. O. Scott, The NYTimes
